Ladies Special: The year has begun on a good note for the girls. The Rani-Vidya combo has already rocked the Box Office with No One Killed Jessica . Next up is Priyanka Chopra who is all set to get into seven get-ups as she plots the murder of her seven husbands in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf . Director’s Cut: The mavericks are back on track. Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur,Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai and Anurag Basu’s Barfee are hardly run of the mill. Kashyap plans a musical action film while Banerjee’s Shanghai co-starring Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol is all about the murky dealings in the political echelons. Basu’s Barfee is a thriller where Ranbir Kapoor plays a deaf mute guy opposite Priyanka Chopra.

Debutantes Inc: Karan Johar ventures into the High School Musical entity with Student of the Year. The film introduces Siddharth Malhotra,Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. Incidentally,Alia is Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter while Varun is director David Dhawan’s son.

Amitabh Bachchan Redux: Two Amitabh Bachchan films will be redone and Abhishek Bachchan will not star in any of them. Hrithik Roshan will play Vijay Dinanath Chauhan in the Karan Johar produced Agneepath remake to be directed by Karan Malhotra. The other Bachchan remake is of course Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2 starring Shah Rukh Khan which is sequel to the modern Don . Priyanka Chopra incidentally stars in both the Bachchan redux projects.

New Item Number: Deepika Padukone aims to take over from Munni and Sheila when she does a Zeenat Aman in Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maaro Dum. The song needs to be extra zingy to beat the original which is still so fresh in the moviegoer’s mind. Rohan and Deepika have their task cut out.

The Aamir Factor: The New Year translates into an Aamir Khan bonanza as the selective Khan has two films lined up for release. He plays a painter in wife Kiran Rao’s directorial debut,Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) while in Reema Kagti’s thriller,he plays an undercover cop. Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji co-star with Aamir in Kagti’s film. Two films and both with female directors, once again Aamir steps in unchartered territory.

Big Break: He made a small ‘by the way’ character debut in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and since then we’ve wanted to see more of the boy. Blessed with a face that is at once reminiscent of her supernova talented mother,Smita Patil,Prateik makes his full fledged appearance with Dhobi Ghat. Then he’ll venture into the multi starrer zone with Amitabh Bachchan,Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan.

Who Wants To Be A Superhero: Shah Rukh Khan plays superhero in Ra.One,Akshay Kumar does it in Shrish Kunder’s Jokerand Saif Ali Khan, while not playing a superhero per se,can boast of some super hero styled stunts in Sriram Raghavan’s much awaited Agent Vinod.
