Trial,balance

* In ‘The Trivedi Tutorial’ (IE,March 18),Shekhar Gupta points out public opinion is needed to carry out reforms. Putting the needs of the railways and its passengers above populism, former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has brought a much-needed reformist railway budget. In an unusual development, people have come forward in open support of Trivedi’s proposals, despite the additional financial burden on passengers. The required public opinion is now there and the UPA government is safe even if the TMC withdraws support. There couldn’t be a more favourable time for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to show some courage.

* This refers to the editorial ‘Mr Mukherjee should have known better’ (IE,March17). It rightly states the proposed retrospective amendments to the IT Act will hurt the investment environment. Increasing indirect tax is regressive and deceives the poor. It’s time to boost industrial growth which automatically percolates down to the service sector. Nothing has been done to accelerate savings and capital formation. People are ready to accept some level of inflation as the cost of a higher growth rate,if adequate safeguards are provided for the poor.

Dictatorial Didi

* Mamata Banerjee is now a symbol of destructive, unproductive politics and India has understood her blackmailing politics (‘Say no to the bully’,IE,March 16). She still wants to run the railways. But as railway minister herself, she had done nothing to boost railway income. The people of West Bengal are suffering due from unemployment, poor health and education systems, bad roads, etc. The government’s income is stagnant. How will Banerjee’s government run smoothly and also provide for the people?

* The sordid drama of Dinesh Trivedi’s resignation on Mamata Banerjee’s demand, with the PM watching helplessly, shows the perils of a coalition government where the tail wags the dog. If the results of the recent assembly elections are any indication, the outcome of the 2014 general elections is a foregone conclusion: of a fractured verdict. That will make the national parties heavily dependent on regional parties, which augers ill for the country.

* The manner in which the railway minister has been forced to quit by the West Bengal CM is not only unprecedented but also a slur on Indian democracy. This unfortunate drama has proved once again that no honest and self-respecting person can hope to serve us through the system of multi-party democracy.
