n This refers to ‘Al-Qaeda warns India…’. Al-Qaeda’s designs on India are not surprising but what is startling is its willingness to fight alongside the Pakistani army. Silence from the Pakistani side means it endorses Al-Qaeda’s stand against India. What further evidence does the US require in declaring Pakistan a terrorist state? It is high time we responded as well: our ministers should issue a counter response to the Al-Qaeda network.

Stay on

n Kashmir has seen a decline in tourism; and tourism is one of the primary sources of income there. This could be ascribed to both the global economic slowdown and tourist security post-26/11. However, pulling the Indian army out of the Valley is not a wise decision as it is important to focus on the continued threat from extremists and Pakistan who haven’t given up their claims to the state. In fact, army presence should engender a sense of security for both foreign as well as domestic tourists.

• Things may well be returning to “normal” in Kashmir. But any troop withdrawal needs to be calculated and cautious, given the sensitivity of the border state. Withdrawal of the army and a full handover of the state to the police should be the ultimate goal. Nevertheless it should be contingent on equipping and training the state police.

No,Minister!

• It is shocking to see the manner in which the ministry of human resource development has treated the National Knowledge Commission recommendations. Now that the stark reality has been exposed by the commission, the PM should stand behind its recommendations. HRD minister Arjun Singh has gone so far as to discreetly question whether the NKC was a good idea.

Another change

• The Iranian revolution was misunderstood. The revolution was about seeking liberty and freedom; and universal fraternity was a distant ambition. However, this has been brought to a halt by the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his outlandish statements. International politics is about inter-state relationships. And no state will tolerate the violence espoused by Ahmadinejad. Hopefully,Iran’s attitude will change once a new presidency is ushered in.

Saving CBI

• The Supreme Court’s admonition to the CBI,over investigations against Mulayam Singh Yadav,is welcome. The need of the hour is to make the CBI accountable to Parliament or a parliamentary standing committee alone.
