Almost 15 months after the Mumbai attack,we’ve had another. While one cannot expect the police to be present everywhere, this does point to poor intelligence gathering. The German Bakery was a soft target, teeming with Westerners and had very easy access. Security forces, particularly the police, have an arduous task: there’s the VIP to protect which consumes huge manpower; there’s also obsolete weaponry and low morale. Instead of blaming the cops, there’s an urgent need for citizens and police to join forces and stay alert. It is truly a sad day when a peaceful city like Pune must see its guests lose their lives in such a tragic way. Sadder still would be if we lost our cool and became partisan.

We are not an authoritarian or autocratic state; democracy permits freedom and it is this freedom which is misused by a few to create unrest. If the common man were to fall prey to such divisive tactics it would mean the end of our democracy and secular existence.

This refers to Ila Patnaik’s ‘Devil’s in the roadmap’ (IE,February 19). One has to recall that the East Asian crisis of the ‘90s did not affect India largely because capital account convertibility was not in place. Even today, utmost care and caution are needed before opening the capital account. Indeed,Budget 2010 is not the appropriate time as our country, not to speak of the West,is yet to recover fully from the recession’s financial shock.

Great expectations

Direct Tax Code,GST,Kirit Parikh Committee report and so many other reports are already tabled in Parliament, and if we expect implementation of these recommendations,it will be expecting too much from the government (‘Devil’s in the roadmap’,IE,February 19). When we expect so many things,we get only frustration. Although Budget 2010 is an opportunity to present India’s vision as expected by Ila Patnaik at the most right time, there will be a myopic vision which will concentrate on control of inflation as well as safeguarding political interests. The dream of capital account convertibility will be the objective of Budget 2020,with such slow reforms. In the backdrop of the fall of financial globalisation,it’s time to rethink on the role of the RBI as well as the government.

Victory,at last

Finally,India scored a victory in the Eden Gardens Test against South Africa, but with struggle and perspiration after a day’s play of more than 100 overs. Yet no bowler could dismiss Hashim Amla who stood like a rock. The spectators were on their toes, anxious for the victory which came in the final overs. There are many lessons from the Test for the Indian team.
