Stick no bills

Apropos ‘A depleted debate’ (IE,September 4),by stalling Parliament, the BJP has projected itself as an irresponsible party. Bent on coming to power in 2014,the leading party of the opposition has forgotten its primary responsibility — that of keeping a watch on the government. The government should aim for consensus on any bill presented in Parliament, but it is also important that the opposition scrutinises the provisions of each bill. With all parties busy in raucous confrontation, perhaps the bills should be passed on to the media and other forums, where there could be a public debate on them. Recommendations could then be sent to Parliament. It is sad that legislation has taken a backseat in the legislature.

Line of fire

DESPITE the 2003 truce between India and Pakistan, firing broke out across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector (‘Indian,Pak troops exchange fire in Uri sector, first in 9 yrs’,IE,September 4). Allegedly,Pakistani troops opened fire to provide cover for infiltrators trying to cross the LoC. All the Indian defence ministry could do in response was to lodge a strongly worded protest.

Caste aside

IN SPITE of the Supreme Court’s verdict against reservation in promotions for SCs and STs,political parties have forged ahead with a bill to ensure such quotas (‘SC/ST quota for promotions in govt jobs cleared by Cabinet’,IE,September 4). Our political classes seem unable to look beyond caste. Promotions should be handed out on the basis of merit.

Pet peeves

THE editorial ‘Jaya’s low blow’ (IE,September 5) was right to point out the pettiness of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s policy on Sri Lankans visiting the state. The two leading parties,DMK and AIADMK,compete with each other to disrupt the Centre’s efforts to cultivate bilateral relations with Sri Lanka. Worse still, the Centre’s hands are tied because of coalition compulsions. Jayalalithaa’s shenanigans will only harm India’s diplomatic efforts to bring about institutional safeguards for the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Raining luck?

THIS refers to ‘Good rain in August fills up reservoirs to normal levels’ (IE,September 3). The rains in August were badly needed, after the months of June and July saw below normal rainfall. Finally, farmers have something to cheer about. Hopefully, these rains will help them get a better yield of crops this year and lessen their misery.
