Stick no bills
* More than anything, the government and Team Anna need flexibility on the Lokpal bill. Team Anna cannot impose its views on Parliament and the nation (Lokpal Bill is in,jury is out,IE,December 23). Anna Hazare and his team should stop their running commentary on the bill and give Parliament enough time to pass it. Social activists shouldnt indulge in branding everything parliamentarians say or do as wrong. It was correctly said by some MPs that laws are not made on the pavement. Anybody is free to make suggestions and agitate, but nothing can be imposed on the people from outside Parliament.

Simplified solution
* Anna Hazare comes across as a crusader fighting corruption with very simplistic ideas and romantic visions. Even by putting in place the most draconian of legislations, corruption will disappear only to reappear. Unless a simple, frugal way of life becomes the order of the day and conspicuous consumption faces societal wrath, this much-needed transformation will never occur. Hazare seems to be unmindful of this.

Nuclear debt
* In the passing away of Dr P.K. Iyengar,Indian science has lost a doyen (A Pokhran-I architect, voice for self-reliance,IE,December 22). He had all his education in India and thus was a truly indigenous nuclear scientist. He passionately advocated the production of sophisticated scientific equipment in the country when it was fashionable to import them as showpieces. He fearlessly opposed the powerful Western countries that put in speed breakers for the development of frontline technologies. Undoubtedly,he was an intellectual giant, with an inevitable arrogance, who couldnt brook mediocrity in people working with him. He gave his best and expected everyone to come up to his standards.

Blind to reality
* This refers to The widening Gulf by C. Raja Mohan (IE,December 23). No doubt,New Delhis deafening silence over the developments in Syria has surprised the world. India cannot remain indifferent when other countries are focusing their attention on Syria. India should review its policy towards this region.

Cold attitude
* With the cold wave sweeping northern India, the number of deaths is on the rise. A sensitive society swings into action during times of distress and provides sympathy and assistance so that the less privileged can cope and also come out of the problem. In our case,we tend to ignore these deaths and look the other way.
