Rude talk

* The editorial ‘Words of warning’ (IE,September 26) rightly condemns BJP leader Yashwant Sinha for his “irresponsible rhetoric” against Home Minister P. Chidambaram. Sinha’s indulgence in the “sab chor hain” philosophy and saying, without evidence, that Chidambaram’s place is the same cell in Tihar jail in which A. Raja has been lodged is shameful. It seems BJP leaders, especially the top rung, are politically frustrated. Their party lacks a specific national agenda and indulges in cheap gimmicks that only harms it further.

* In ‘Words of warning’,you have rightly said that Yashwant Sinha was irresponsible for saying that P. Chidambaram’s place is in the prison cell with A. Raja. Many politicians are guilty on this count. Which political party is not guilty and corrupt? Give the BJP a long tenure at the helm like the Congress and see them match up with the UPA’s corruption.

A mix-up

* The editorial ‘Words of warning’ should be an eye-opener not only for the BJP and Yashwant Sinha but also for Anna Hazare,as both Hazare and Sinha claim P. Chidambaram’s place is in Tihar jail. Sinha has displayed superb skill in making his comment sound like a verdict. But in reality, the finance ministry’s note seems to be about disagreements over policy, not corruption. You are right is saying that “this difference seems to have been elided over, and now Sinha has upped the ante considerably.”

Wrongly read

* The editorial ‘Not convincing’ (IE,September 27) jumped the gun, because its protest is not convincing at all. The V.R. Krishna Iyer Commission has recommended punitive action only against those who carry out propaganda against the national policy on the rights and welfare of women and children. It has not,in any manner, suggested any punishment for a man/ woman for having more than two children. In fact,as explained in the editorial, the commission has suggested incentives for those adhering to the two-child norm. There’s nothing illiberal in the report, except that it takes on the liberty assumed by certain people or organisations to go against the national family planning policy.

* The news about a Christian schoolgirl in Pakistan being expelled from school simply because of a spelling mistake in a school test shows the horrific effects of fundamentalism (‘Pak girl’s family faces hate campaign’,IE,September 27). That people demanded criminal action against her is horrifying.
