Reforming India

* CONTRARY to the oft-repeated assertions of reform-sceptics that growth-oriented policies increase GDP but do not necessarily address poverty, the provisional data from the 68th NSSO’s household consumer expenditure survey emphatically reinforces the pro-growth claim that sustained higher growth can potentially lift all boats (‘The bottom line’,IE,August 3). The benefits of reform are being cornered not just by the educated and the highly skilled but are also helping those at the bottom of the pyramid. Thus,it is not just a passive trickle-down strategy, instead it represents an active pull-up strategy. The long-term promise of the reforms remains intact. Alas, the policy paralysis is costing us heavily in terms of missed growth opportunities and consequent poverty alleviation. One only wishes New Delhi would draw the right lessons from this.

* TEAM ANNA’S latest fast was doomed (‘Anna wakes up to 2014: Fast “waste of time”’,IE,August 3). It was a sensible, strategic withdrawal from the “fast track”. They have finally opted for the political route to achieve their aim rather than holding a gun to Parliament’s head. Good luck to them.

New Delhi

* HAVING given the government sufficient time to pass the Lokpal Bill,Team Anna resorted to the fast-unto-death route again. The government has still not paid any heed to their efforts. Team Anna’s decision to join politics is a step in the right direction and we find ourselves in safe hands forthwith. The government, which was dragging its feet on the Lokpal, will pay a heavy price for its sluggishness. We have witnessed numerous scams during this government’s tenure. Apart from financial improprieties, this government has failed to address the law and order situation, terror and a dwindling economy among other problems. It is time to follow Anna Hazare and realise our common dream of a corruption-free India.

Age gracefully

* THIS refers to ‘Grey and greyer’ (IE,July 26). Youth is creative, adventurous, critical. Age must be conservative, cautious, quiescent. The India habit of consulting the old folk on most occasions and paying too much heed to their opinion is detrimental to the best interests of society. There is no special merit in being old. Time doesn’t always make people better. The old claim to have the “advantage of experience”. This is actually a record of their mistakes, misdeeds and misfortune. Sixty-plus politicians, take your well-earned repose and relax in the love and respect of your young ones. You should be spectators now,not players.
