• Jaithirth Rao has brought before us some blatant truths behind India’s intellectual exodus, which has made it an area of darkness. India, the land of Sanskrit and,off course,of Dalits, hasn’t undertaken any initiative to grant Sanskrit scholarships to Dalit students. There’s no doubt that we’ve abandoned the pursuit of higher learning in India. Students moving out of India for higher education and research don’t raise eyebrows these days. The mushrooming of international schools all over India is also the testimony to this.

In spite of Macaulay’s “historic report”,we copied blindly their system of education. I’m sure many aren’t aware that we copied the French model of higher learning, with institutions specialising in single areas. Rao has aptly noted IIMs,IITs and their self-selected students. They must set forth for original knowledge and produce seminal research.

• Ever since Sachin Tendulkar completed 20 years in International Cricket, numerous articles have been written about him. But one paragraph in the article ‘Highs and lows, but no regrets’ by Kunal Pradhan,is an eye-opener: “People often ask me about the pressure, but there is pressure on everybody. I don’t believe that my pressure is greater than yours. From my childhood,Achrekar Sir taught me the ingredients for success… My brother Ajit guided me,my father supported me,and my mother ensured I was well fed. They are all forces contributing in different ways…”

Nowadays, most people tend to take their parents, friends and teachers for granted. They forget the contributions of their family and teachers. It is worth noting that Sachin,in spite of his success, has not only remained the same but has also acknowledged the influence of each and every individual in his life.

Dravid days

• Dravid has once again shown with his Test century at Ahmedabad against the Sri Lankans why he has been named The Wall. Given the priceless cricketer that he is,one wonders why he is dropped often from the ODI team. His very presence in the team inspires confidence and the desire to perform among the youngsters. The outcome of the recent ODI series against Australia could possibly have been different with Dravid in the side. This century is therefore a message to the selectors.

• Tavleen Singh’s article ‘Manu’s parole shames us all’ and Sankar Sen’s ‘Problems with parole’ are well-argued. It’s true that if newspapers hadn’t followed it relentlessly,Manu Sharma wouldn’t have been traced at the end of his generously extended parole. Indeed, the Delhi government seems to have bent over backwards to give Sharma his time out.
