• This refers to R.K. Pachauri’s ‘All set for Copenhagen’. A precise and timely article,it not only analyses the causes and effects of climate change but also measures and guidelines for Indian policymakers to take to Copenhagen, which will safeguard the interests of India as well as those of the world. Indeed,as an effect of climate change global surface temperature is rising along with the sea level. This is a cause of the increase in the frequency, intensity and duration of floods in India. It has also negatively impacted agricultural yields and productivity. Now it has become essential to share the responsibility to reduce GHGs.

However,Pauchari rightly suggests that if the developed world commits to adequate reduction of GHG emissions, serious financial and technology transfer, then only should the Indian government commit to reductions.

Good work

• Former CJI J.S. Verma is doing yeoman service to the judiciary through his periodic articles. His opinion on the appointment of Justice Dinakaran to the apex court is timely and welcome to all. An independent judiciary is the need of the hour along with judicious and transparent decisions.

Ambiguous approach

• The tribal hinterland of Afghanistan has,for generations, successfully resisted invaders — whether the British or the Soviets. After 9/11,the Americans got involved in Afghanistan and were forced to dig in. The epicentre of the Afghan-Taliban insurgency has since moved to Pakistan’s north-western regions, where even Pakistan has no great pretensions to control of their own territory.

By setting a clear date in the summer of 2011 for the US withdrawal to begin, despite the absence of any indication that the new strategy will get him any closer to success,Obama appears to be astride two boats. Such an ambiguous approach is neither here nor there. There has to be a single-minded and concerted action by the US and its allies. Given the fluid political situation in Pakistan,India must go beyond wishing that the US will be able to bring in a semblance of order in this volatile neighbourhood and chip in by all possible means.

Sehwag on fire

• Virender Sehwag set the picturesque Brabourne stadium on fire with his swashbuckling 293,only seven runs short of becoming the only cricketer to score three triple centuries. Sehwag is the hardest hitter of the ball in international cricket, and when he gets going, the best of bowlers forget their line and rhythm. Sehwag is a great entertainer and the beauty of his batting is that he still plays copybook, without swinging his bat wildly to score at a fast pace.
