Farewell Dey

* Manna Dey will be missed. People may not be aware of his Malayali connection. Dey’s wife was from Kerala and was a singer herself. They first met when she was singing in a chorus at a Rabindra Sangeet programme in Mumbai. Dey,who sang thousands of songs in several languages, won the hearts of Malayalis with a single song: “Manasa Maine Varu” that he sang for the film Chemmeen.

Delayed justice

* Consumer rights groups seem to be celebrating the Kunal Saha medical negligence judgment. But the fact that the case only reached its final conclusion 15 years after the incident exposes the glaring inefficiency of our legal system. Let’s not forget what they say about delayed justice.

No forward movement

* This refers to ‘Ten months later’ by Indira Jaising (IE,October 25). The December 16 Delhi gangrape led to fierce agitations and protests, which compelled the Centre to revisit the criminal statutes related to crimes against women. The Centre duly rectified and revamped these, based on the Justice Verma report. But 10 months later, the Mumbai gangrape trial and the Dwarka fast-track court judgment show that all these legal amendments have had little impact. This is not the first time that the Centre has been confronted with a serious administrative issue that it seeks to rectify through changes in the law. We have hundreds of acts and covenants on paper, but we don’t seem to have moved forward at all. At this rate nothing would have changed even 10 years later.

Irresponsible words

* One had hardly recovered from the shock of Rahul Gandhi’s earlier election rally statement,in which he maintained that “communal forces” had killed his grandmother and father, when he made an extremely irresponsible statement at a public meeting in Indore (‘Pak agencies in touch with riot-hit Muslims in Muzaffarnagar: Rahul’ IE,October 25). Rahul asserted that an intelligence officer had told him that a few Muslim youths who had lost family in the Muzaffarnagar riots, were contacted by Pakistani intelligence agencies. As usual, the ruling party’s probable prime ministerial candidate seemed oblivious to the explosive nature of his disclosure. It is not clear why an intelligence officer should brief Rahul Gandhi when he does not hold any office in government. Rahul also seemed unaware

of the light in which his statements could be seen

to be painting the said Muslim youths. The statement inappropriately revealed sensitive information at a public rally.
