Look who’s talking

* APROPOS ‘Making a scene’ (IE,August 24),the BJP is going full throttle on corruption, thanks to the Congress leadership’s silence. The BJP is using the CAG report on the allotment of coal blocks to try and embarrass the UPA. Given that opposition parties, including the BJP,also opposed the auctioning of coal blocks not long ago, this hullabaloo only shows its hypocrisy and double standards. This is why, instead of debating the report in toto dispassionately,it is creating a scene in Parliament through obstructionist tactics to deflect attention from a chink in its armour. In this situation, the Congress leadership needs to lead from the front, and reverse the situation by confronting the BJP with facts and figures.

Strong at home

* THIS refers to ‘Maharashtra to arrange chartered flights for NE students’ (IE,August 22). This gesture is appreciated. However, the government should also help these troubled states strengthen their higher education infrastructure so that those who don’t want to travel far and wide in search of education, can satisfy their need at home.

Uneven hand

* WITH reference to ‘Hindus face problems in Pakistan Punjab too’ (IE,August 24),I recall an incident when I visited Pakistan in 1992. I went to the gurudwaras there and found Hindus coming to serve. One young man told me they were facing difficulties while the Sikhs were treated better by local Muslims and he was thinking of becoming a Sikh.

Flying low

* THIS refers to ‘Pilots’ strike bogs down Air India in international skies’ (IE,August 24). India’s flagship airline had commenced operations decades before those mentioned in the report. Poor customer service, mismanagement, corruption, delays and cancellation of flights, apart from its errant and defiant employees, have escalated its financial loss. Its fleet is not comfortable. Because of all this, travellers prefer other airlines.

Helping the helpers

* IT IS good news that the Central and state governments have been advised by the apex court to work out a plan to support those who help accident victims on the spot and save them from being subjected to harassment by the police and follow-up legal procedures (‘Encourage bystanders to help accident victims: SC to govts’,IE,August 5). Inquiries should be made by the police at a place and time convenient to the helper. Legal formalities should be completed in a single summons and expenses should be borne by the police. This will encourage others to extend their help without any hesitation.
