This is with reference to UPA Shanghaied: Takes a Jairam hit, from China. Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh doesnt seem to realise that he is not confining himself to his area of responsibilities. Very often,he seems to overrate himself, whether over a convention gown in Bhopal or trying to undermine a cabinet minister,Kamal Nath. He gets into domains that are certainly not his. But we have more than one of this kind of minister. Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister Alagiri gives a miss to Parliament as often as possible, and Trinamool boss and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee was absent from her office and Parliament when Mumbai came to a halt because of the motormen strike. Earlier it was Shashi Tharoor whose gaffes caused acute embarrassment to the prime minister. The PM should enforce his authority.

Census concern
It is unfortunate that in the history of independent India the 2011 census will be the first time caste will be measured. The last time was in 1931,under British rule. Caste has no relevance to the India of the 21st century. It serves no purpose and is a direct hindrance to economic development. Our power hungry politicians wish to drag India back to ancient times, for political gains,by fooling the general public.

Death questions
The death sentence to Ajmal Kasab is just. His trial proves that we in India do not run kangaroo courts, even for those who dare to wage war against this country. But we should also convey to the Kasab and members of his ilk that our civility should not be seen as our weakness. This message can be delivered to our adversaries across the border only if we are able to achieve political consensus on all issues concerning our national security. The next big task for our political class is to ensure that they are able to rise above narrow political interests and allow our security and intelligence agencies to do their duty.

Kasab was sent to India as a member of a fidayeen squad, brainwashed into ending his life while brutally slaughtering hundreds of innocents. Therefore,if he is now condemned to die by hanging, his eventual fate will not be different from that of his fiendish accomplices who were killed by our brave security forces. So,the death penalty, though fully warranted, may not shock or deter his supporters and sponsors.
But neither the LeT,nor its sponsors, nor the state actors who trained Kasab and his gang in GPS navigation techniques and weapons, came forward to offer Kasab any moral support or legal help. Kasab was used, disowned and discarded contemptuously!
