• This refers to ‘Walk the Talk’ with Suresh Kalmadi. Though displaying immense confidence,Kalmadi has failed to provide proof of a solid action plan. His accusations against the Commonwealth Games Federation CEO,Mike Hooper, border on trivialities. Also, one questions how he can take credit for India’s first Olympic gold medal. Should he be serious about achieving his objectives,he will have to rise above the blame-game,revamp faltering groups and ensure cooperation from all the people involved.

• The recent visit by Commonwealth Games Federation officials to New Delhi in order to monitor preparations has created a lot of controversies, namely our readiness with reference to both infrastructure and operational aspects. The gravity of the situation could be gauged from the fact that Suresh Kalmadi has wrongfully sought the exit of Mike Hooper. The bone of contention is not unfounded and is certainly a matter of grave national concern as our unpreparedness can be seen at ground zero. If the IOA fails to deliver, the entire nation’s image could suffer immensely.

• It appears as though Suresh Kalmadi and his counterparts are trying their best to convince the Indian public that the country will be ready to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. One questions how such a feat can be possible when our national games could not be held on time. Further, there is both a lack of management and capacity, both required to build infrastructure.

Just reserve

• The debate on whether a scientist or a pilot should be the astronaut aboard ISRO’s debut manned mission to space is easily avoidable,as some seats can be reserved for scientists and the rest for pilots. However,ISRO is not incorrect in stating that pilots are not the only ones skilled enough to be astronauts; take for instance Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams, who were both engineers.

Hollow talk

• It is worrying that the Maoists are wreaking further havoc by attracting sympathy from the urban elite as they try to showcase their cause as an attempt to uplift the marginalised. The irony however is that the Union government has not been able to properly comprehend the multi-pronged strategy of the Maoists. That is,on the one hand, the Maoists discourse on deprivation and lack of development in tribal areas — while on the other they have ruthlessly persisted in the destruction of infrastructure itself. It is therefore essential that the intellectual vacuity of their ideology be exposed.
