Opinion In hindsight
We are seriously poorer for not having leaders with the gumption and steel to protect their big ideas.
* Shekhar Gupta has done well to highlight (Scared Witless,IE,August 10) the single most critical issue facing our country today the need for a strong and resolute leader. We are seriously poorer for not having leaders with the gumption and steel to protect their big ideas. To begin with,Im starting to wonder whether our leaders even have big ideas. I agree that the damage done to the institution of prime minister,is this coalitions single most harmful contribution to our politics. The seeds of this sorry state of affairs were sown in 2004,when a system where the PM has neither authority nor power was instituted. I wish we had realised then what we were getting into, and what the implications of this set-up were.

* I agree that UPA2 totally lacks the courage to stand by its convictions. I have been a Congress supporter, mainly because of the there is no alternative factor. I have now started reconsidering my position. Even the federal front cant be worse than the present combine.

* This refers to Sindhu smashes her way into Indian history,World semis (IE,August 10). Indian badminton reached a new high as the 18-year-old,10th seeded P.V. Sindhu beat the 2nd seeded defending champion Wang Yihan in straight sets to enter the quarter finals of the Badminton World Championships. Yihan has beaten Saina Nehwal several times in the past, including at the London Olympics. Sindhus brilliant victory is not only a feather in her cap,it is also retribution for Nehwals defeats at the hands of Yihan. Sindhu has the makings of a world champion. Well all be watching her eagerly.

* This refers to The war on TV by Shailaja Bajpai (IE,August 8). The writer is spot on when she says war against Pakistan has already been declared on several TV channels. It hardly matters what the government of India does now. TV channels have done what they see fit and proper for the nation,on behalf of the government. These days, unfortunately, bad news has entertainment value. The modus operandi of TV news is as follows: Announce a debate, call the usual suspects as panellists, and instruct them to be as confrontational and shrill as possible. Pakistan, our favourite whipping boy, helps us forget and focus away from everything thats wrong within our own country. The present noise on TV makes me nostalgic for those good, dull old days when all there was to watch on TV was one grainy sarkari channel, which gave us our news sans the masala.
