The housing loan arrests (‘LIC Housing CEO,ex-PSU officers in CBI net over bribe-for-loan scandal’,IE,November 25) remind one that financial misdemeanour in the form of bribes for getting loans does not come as a shock in our country where you even have to grease palms for getting death certificates. This expose should benefit borrowers henceforth and those involved should be severely punished so that in future, people think twice before getting into such malicious transactions.

Show us the money

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has claimed that from Natwar Singh to Shashi Tharoor to Suresh Kalmadi,it is the Congress which has acted on corruption (‘Sonia to Oppn: Spare us your double standards,IE,November 25). By doing what? Asking for resignations? It would have been more appropriate for the Congress to get back the money swindled.

Patting up a storm

It is reported that Manmohan Singh patted A. Raja’s back at a function organised by the DMK in memory of Murasoli Maran (‘2G scam: PM’s back-patting diplomacy with Raja irks BJP,’ IE,November 23). The BJP has disapproved of this saying it will send a wrong signal at a time when the Supreme Court is looking into the 2G spectrum scam. The BJP is wrong. The prime minister’s gesture sends only the right signal. It reaffirms the Congress was in cahoots with the DMK in the scam and the action taken against Raja was just an eyewash.

Work pays

Apropos your editorial ‘Bihar leads India’ (November 25),in the face of Lalu Prasad’s witticisms and wily caste politics, the massive mandate in Bihar for Nitish Kumar has demonstrated the state need not be dysfunctional, nor should it be turned over to vested interests. High-sounding speeches and rallies will not click with the people. Work on roads, bridges, healthcare and law has proved that a politics of true and lawful governance is possible. The precision with which Nitish worked for the common man has not only paid him rich dividends but has also given a loud message to the political “rulers” elsewhere in the country that those who try to fool and exploit the masses are bound to be decimated sooner than later.

Nuclear family

This refers to C. Raja Mohan’s ‘My enemy’s enemy is my friend’ (‘Chinese Takeway’,IE,November 24). China is a great cause of worry in the Asia-Pacific region. China, being one of the P-5 nations and promoting nuclear proliferation in disguise, may lead to chaos in the United Nations. The trio of China,Pakistan and North Korea may whitewash global efforts to maintain peace and tranquility. India should demonstrate its diplomacy to the world in tackling such issues.
