Holy cow
* Earlier the full fury of the liberal instinct of this newspaper was spent on 300 Ramayanas; now the criticism is on banning cow slaughter (Draconian,IE,January 4). This is basically Hindu-bashing in the guise of opinionating against obscurantism, communalism, fundamentalism and extremism. Cow protection has always been on the BJPs agenda. So why this brouhaha over the party proceeding to fulfil one of its electoral promises?

Token politics
* Didis show (IE,January 5) had an interesting take on the political mayhem in West Bengal over the proposal to rename Indira Bhavan. Politics of symbolism has acquired a powerful thrust in India. The use of the national flag in Anna Hazares campaign and the controversy generated by Narendra Modi during his Sadbhavna fast with his rejection of the skull cap are all part of this. We hope that the present government in West Bengal will wake up to the real concerns of the people, and not deflect attention with its renaming business.

* This refers to Look whos hiring (IE,January 5). The BJP has shamelessly accepted the BSP discards into its fold. This shows how desperate the BJP is to enhance its votebank in UP. On the one hand the party resolves to eliminate corruption and on the other it receives allegedly corrupt politicians. The BJP has become the Bhrasht Janata Party!

* The editorial Look whos hiring has exposed the BJP. What sort of magic does the BJP possess which can turn the tainted into the innocent once they join it? As the main opposition party, the BJP needs to know that an example is always better than a precept. If it does not look within, the piggyback ride on the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement would end in a big fall.

* It would be an exaggeration to suggest that the controversy over the army chiefs age (With due respect,IE,January 5) showcases a subservient image of the army before the political class,or that it lowers the morale of the defence establishment. Morale is a long-term psychological construct, and the current imbroglio does not involve the lowering of skillsets, the marginalisation of a particular battalion or the curbing of soldierly privileges and prestige. The graceful solution should be for the government to accept General V.K. Singhs date of birth as 1951 and rectify a clerical oversight, and the General resigning voluntarily thereafter. It would be pretty awkward to see the defenders of the borders approaching the defenders of justice against the very governmental structures they protect. A negotiated truce is the order of the day.
