High drama

* HISTRIONICS never cease in the UPA. After Mamata Banerjee,it is NCP leader Sharad Pawar’s turn to stage a drama (‘Angry Pawar,Praful skip Cabinet meet’,IE,July 20). According to reports, after boycotting the cabinet meeting,Pawar held talks with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. The Congress is under no obligation to give the No 2 position in the cabinet to Pawar. However, after Pranab Mukherjee’s exit,he comes next in seniority and perhaps deserves the position. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has now attempted to reach out to the NCP leader, calling him a “valued colleague”. As the leader of the coalition,it is the Congress’s duty to make sure that all its partners are kept happy.

Dark reality

* IT WAS shocking to read the report ‘Indore man kept wife’s private parts locked for four years’ (IE,July 17). What defies belief is that the victim tolerated such torture for four years. The issue must serve as impetus to increase education among women, with special emphasis on their rights. Politicians should enact the women’s reservation bill so that more female legislators can reach out to underprivileged women and help improve their lot.

Cold comfort

* WHAT help can women who are victims of rape and molestation expect from the NCW when its own chief blames women for dressing “provocatively” (‘Against the woman’,IE,July 19)? Mamta Sharma’s insensitive remarks represent our patriarchal society’s attitude of not treating women as equal beings. The NCW’s failure to rise to the occasion may lie in the fact that its members are political appointees. Their involvement in women’s welfare may be questioned and their response leaves much to be desired when it comes to the crunch.

Cricket diplomacy

* THE recent decision taken by the BCCI and PCB to resume bilateral cricketing ties must be hailed (‘To break the ice,India,Pak teams meet this winter’,IE,July 17). It could definitely be a confidence-building measure. A lot has happened since 26/11. The heads of both governments have attempted to bridge the gap. It is heartening that this restoring of ties is being echoed in cricket.

Way to go

* IT WAS a pleasant surprise to read that Roopnagar,in Punjab, will move towards organic farming (‘Going organic’,IE,July 20). This should be emulated in other parts of India and across the world. In the United States, organic food is expensive but suffers from lax quality standards. However,Roopnagar seems to have found a way to be eco-friendly while reducing the costs of growing wheat, paddy and other crops.
