Game is over

* I fully agree with Shekhar Gupta’s position on Afghanistan (‘Get out, leave Af to Pak’,IE,November 19). Britain, the US and Russia, after decades of involvement, have failed to bring stability to that region. However, the problem with Afghanistan is inherent. A meaningful resolution can only be achieved when the country makes serious political, economic and educational reforms. India should maintain its economic and diplomatic ties, not a military one. Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan is uncertain and it’s up to the Afghans to decide if they are dealing with a friend or a foe.

* In ‘Get out, leave Af to Pak’,Shekhar Gupta makes a clinical analysis of the Indo-Af-Pak tangle. The balance of power has changed over the past decades, and so has the relevance of this region and the need for a superpower to have a foothold there. There is no reason for India to carry the Afghan baggage when others have left it for good.

* How can India forget its age-old ties with Afghanistan? The world knows and appreciates that our presence in Afghanistan,at the invitation of its government,is helping the country. Should we abandon those humanitarian and socially important projects? Also,we should be wary of another problem: once the US leaves Afghanistan in 2014,there could be a replay of what happened after the Russians had withdrawn. Militants could increasingly make their way to Kashmir.

Order in the House

* The winter session is a good chance for the parliamentarians to get some important legislative work done (‘Twenty-one days’,IE,November 21). There will be pressure on the members from the public to get vital bills passed. For instance,if the Lokpal bill is not passed,it may lead to another round of altercation between Team Anna and the government. The Centre will be keen to avoid this at any cost. The Parliament must take this into account, build a consensus and get its act together.

* Apropos ‘Azhar denies ‘96 fixing charge, questions Kambli’s credibility’ (IE,November 19),Vinod Kambli’s allegations and tears brought back March 13,1996,when India played Sri Lanka in the World Cup semifinal. I was at Eden Gardens. Many of us were shocked when Indian skipper M. Azharuddin asked Sri Lanka to bat first. But it was the heroic batting of Aravinda de Silva that helped Sri Lanka make 251 for eight. India, who were 99 for three, collapsed to 120 for eight in 34.1 overs. Despite the bad call after the toss,it only seemed like cricket and its uncertainties. Kambli either has to substantiate his allegations or apologise.
