Easy ranks

Apropos ‘Army honour for close combat warfare expert’ (IE,November 2),while I can understand the honour being bestowed on Deepak Rao for training soldiers in unarmed combat,I cannot understand the honorary ranks conferred on M.S. Dhoni and Abhinav Bindra for their achievements in sports. This whole business of honorary titles has spun out of control: university doctorates are conferred on filmstars, politicians, sportspersons who have no connection with academics, and now the army is conferring ranks on civilians. Not only is it unfair to those who struggle to attain degrees and ranks,it has no earthly meaning as,in the eventuality of war, these sportspersons are not going to lead our troops or even engage in planning. When people study hard to get a degree, when soldiers struggle hard to get promoted, why distribute these honours? There are sufficient awards in every field to acknowledge such people.

Scrap the worry

The report ‘Railways sees fall in scrap, plans e-auction’ (IE,November 2) seems to suggest the fall in the scrap quantity this year is a cause for worry and, obliquely,a sign of the falling performance of the railways, which is not correct. In manufacturing and operations, falling scrap means better operational efficiency and good maintenance of stocks, which is true for the railways too. If they go about producing scrap just to sell it,and show earnings from unconventional sources as desired by the minister, that should be the real cause for worry.

Break fast

This refers to ‘On Lokpal,Anna warns of Fast No. 3’ (IE,November 2). People are unable to understand why the so-called anti-corruption crusader,Anna Hazare,is repeatedly threatening the government, even though the prime minister has already assured that a strong Lokpal bill will be taken up in the winter session. Is this Team Anna’s ploy to discredit the government and rake in accolades?

Faridabad

Anna Hazare believes in a childish game. In the name of fasting,he repeatedly threatens the government and its system by showing he is surrounded by people’s power. Is there a connection here with the grassroots people who are mostly poor and uneducated? We wish to be governed by the laws made by our political representatives.

Grand event

The Formula One Indian Grand Prix, which concluded on Sunday, left a deep imprint on India. India is now globally accepted as a country which can host a very expensive sporting event with perfection and quality. India’s public and private sectors should promote this sport because, now that we have a world-class track,we need our own Schumacher.
