This refers to ‘From Didi for Durga: A gift of 10-day off’ (IE,October 18). Even the Left had shied away from shutting down West Bengal for that long, but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is perhaps trying to replicate China’s Golden Week. China’s weeklong holiday translates into brisk business because its citizens have money to splurge. Bengal may have the time to spend, but not the money. Trade unions of both the CPM and the TMC have directed newspaper delivery agents to not work for four days. This is a Durga Puja gift to a state with its own special work culture.

Shielded by the state

THIS refers to ‘Robert Vadra-DLF land deal: 42 transfers in 21 years and holding on’ (IE,October 17). Ashok Khemka’s sudden transfer raises doubts about the role of the Haryana government in the DLF-Robert Vadra case. Civil servants need to work without fear or favour, insulated from the influence of politicians. The alleged irregularities must be probed by a special committee that is free of political influence. The judiciary needs to step in. However,in cases like this one,how is the judiciary expected to deliver speedy justice when the executive is shielding the alleged wrongdoers?

For free speech

STEEL minister Beni Prasad Verma brazenly admitted that Rs 71 lakhs is too small an amount for a Union minister to embezzle (‘Beni again: Khurshid will not do any wrong for Rs 71 lakh’,IE,October 15). This was followed by the Congress general secretary,Digvijaya Singh, saying that his party had enough material on former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s son-in-law but that it had obeyed the unwritten law of not touching the family of the opposition. So far, insinuation and innuendo were the norm, but now it is a open war of words. Is this what politicians call freedom of expression?

Crusader Kejriwal

INDIA is lucky to have an upright citizen like Arvind Kejriwal. Some people, especially journalists, allege he has a political agenda. If that were true,it gives us hope about our dying institutions. Not getting a satisfactory Lokpal forced him to choose political means. If people suspect him of being politically motivated, what about the blows we have already suffered from the established political parties?

RAPE cases are becoming a nightmare in India. Administrators are doing precious little to prevent their occurrence. This is why unconstitutional bodies like khap panchayats assume importance. The suggestion of lowering girls’ minimum age for marriage only indicates that unmarried girls are still perceived as a burden by our society. The right approach is to make punitive action for rapists stricter and quicker.
