• While the 24-hour TV channels have filled a vacuum in the routine life of ordinary people, the new, energetic, enterprising and brave dimension of TV journalism has often sensationalised coverage to the extent of earning the strong disapproval of a variety of viewers. Often the coverage is not only inaccurate and sensational,it’s provocative as well. How do you describe the newsreader’s question to the reporter at the site of a communal riot: “Do you find people carrying any weapons like knives and swords or throwing stones and burning and damaging the vehicles?” Such instances of journalistic misuse of freedom, howsoever limited to a few individuals and channels, leads to an essential public revulsion. But I think the media should neither be curbed nor supervised by any state agency.

• I think the picture is not that gloomy with respect to the print media. A large number of readers shape and change their opinions based on what they read. Second,in spite of paid news, readers give credence to what is published. What has dented the media’s image is the broadcast media. Barring some exceptions, most TV news channels make trivial to semi-serious presentations and analyses of news. Most gratifyingly, the Indian public abhors attacks on journalistic freedom as evidenced in the defeat of Indira Gandhi post-Emergency.

• This refers to the editorial ‘Local heroes’. Without solid fan support, the IPL will find it difficult to keep the momentum. More than 90 matches will be played in the next edition and,in my opinion,it’ll be overkill. The main reason why Indians love cricket is that India is one of the best cricket playing nations. No doubt, they like their favourite heroes too. But the feelings for a particular city team are not that strong. First, there are only eight city teams while the number of cities with cricket lovers is much more. Second, the teams contain very few players who belong to that particular city. Third, cricket craze is still an urban phenomenon in our country, and today’s cricket-loving urban youth don’t remain confined to their own city, therefore not developing any strong emotional bond with their city of origin.

• This refers to the editorial ‘Big B-oomerang’. Amitabh Bachchan’s larger than life image is largely a media creation. Bachchan has partly himself to blame for the unedifying controversies he is often caught in. He is glaringly seen rubbing shoulders with some wily and wheeling and dealing politicians’ and he allows himself to be associated with their self-serving and publicity seeking projects. Bachchan should know that one is known by the company one keeps.
