It is indisputable that wide-ranging reforms are needed in order to ensure that India’s growth becomes truly inclusive in the decade ahead. It may be the case that high growth rates can be achieved without reform, but that could mean standing on the wrong side of history — where we are not bold and ambitious enough to become an advanced country that can provide basic standards of living to its own people.

Peace under attack

The attack on Srinagar’s Lal Chowk by militants shows that these terrorists are enemies of Islam and humanity. This latest attack has disturbed the prospects of peace in Kashmir, where people’s lives had become normal after many years. Nevertheless, the attack and terrorists’ attempts to keep militancy alive are at odds with people’s desire to live peacefully in a democracy in order to empower themselves and their children. This desire resulted in the mandate for the new government in the state. However, the Union government should immediately read the warnings and use all resources to dismantle the terror network. The people of J&K should exercise restraint and not listen to any rumour and then panic. They need to display stoicism and maturity by helping each other and the government. The fresh attack demands an increase in security forces in the state as well as international condemnation.

Doing nothing?

This refers to the editorial ‘Policy resolution’ and Arindam Banik’s well-timed ‘The problem with prices’ (IE,January 2). Regarding the editorial’s suggestion about combating price rise,no one can deny the desirability of certainty in the RBI’s stance on monetary policy. The manner in which food prices are shooting up is assuming alarming proportions. Food inflation of this magnitude is rare, and the argument of crop failure is partially acceptable. The most likely reasons could be the entry of MNCs,forward trading in cereals and pulses with speculative motives and also hoarding by dishonest traders. All of them are taking undue advantage of the prevailing situation. But sadly, the government has done nothing to control the food inflation. Ironically, the opposition has also forgotten the critical issue of price rise.

Looking east

This refers to C. Raja Mohan’s ‘Look to our near east’ (IE,January 7). Strengthening bilateral ties is necessary. By conferring the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize on Sheikh Hasina,India has acknowledged the importance of Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s crackdown on anti-India groups such as ULFA and the jihadi outfits proves its desire for cordial relations. Keeping China’s increasing interest in Bangladesh in mind,India must play a bigger role in its development. Financial aid and big investment in Bangladesh can help.
