Bleak state
* For people besieged by scores of problems and crises,Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs Independence Day speech was hardly reassuring (Price rights,IE,August 16). Because,in every one of the topics he touched in his speech, the PM appeared as helpless as his listeners. He just catalogued the problems facing the country without mentioning how his government intended to solve them. The bleak weather during the ceremony formed a perfect backdrop for the dreary address. It aggravated the mood of pessimism and despondency.

Seize the day
* By arresting Anna Hazare a day after Independence Day,it looks like the government has hijacked democracy, rule of law and accountability. The number of scams during the UPAs tenure is big,the security of the country is at stake. If a man like Anna Hazare fights, hes put behind bars. People should unite and come forward on the single cause of eliminating corruption. This is the time to wake up and do something.

Last pillar
* The manner of the arrests of Anna Hazare and his associates reminds one of the black days of the Emergency. Of the three pillars of democracy, the government has made the legislature and the executive dance to the tune of the ruling politicians. The people of India now rest their hopes of saving the country and its people only on the third pillar the judiciary, which has been instrumental in taking tough action against the corrupt.

Early start
* The early morning action of the Delhi Police,in detaining Anna Hazare and his associates,is one more instance of our imperialist and colonial-minded police forces. The claim that preventive arrest was resorted to as Hazare was to defy prohibitory orders imposed by the Delhi Police, seems a lame excuse. The fundamental rights of every Indian citizen to freedom of speech and expression as well as to assemble peacefully without arms,as enshrined in our Constitution, need to be respected in letter and spirit.

Misled nation
* The arrest of Anna Hazare and his team is justified. They cannot be above the law. They turned what is an anti-corruption movement into a movement against the Congress and the government. The so-called country-wide support for Hazare is illusory. Its a well-calculated misinformation campaign Team Anna has succeeded in spreading that once their Lokpal bill draft is accepted and passed by Parliament corruption in public life will come to an end. There can be nothing farther from the truth. The media and opinion-makers on TV are making Hazare larger than life. I dont think the youth supporting Hazare even knows what the Lokpal is about.
