Bail birds

* This refers to ‘Infinite justice’ (IE,June 4). It’s debatable whether people like Kanimozhi and A. Raja should be granted bail. The big issue is the time taken for the closure of such cases. If they are granted bail, they can be in a position to influence proceedings and delay the outcome. But it’s often seen that high-profile people are able to dictate terms even when in jail. House arrest and electronic monitoring can be a decent alternative, but what’s the guarantee that those responsible for the same won’t be bought over?

Class apart

* Jaswant Singh is absolutely right in sympathising with the plight of A. Raja and Kanimozhi rotting in jail (with VIP facilities contrary to the prison book),since their alleged crime is not of a heinous nature like robbery or murder. After all, those two are a class apart from ordinary souls and they need to be treated like state guests! Singh being a well-read and knowledgeable person ought to know that the offence for which they are being investigated is betrayal of trust — much worse than robbery or murder.

Get them all

* While preparing an effective Lokpal bill that can be turned into a genuine deterrent in the national interest, leaders of all political parties ought to remember well that they are the representatives of crores of their voters — not of anti-socials or anti-nationals. Besides, how can anybody guarantee that any future prime minister, somebody from the PMO,judiciary, etc won’t be corrupt? Therefore, all of the aforesaid people should also be brought within the ambit of the Lokpal.

Privilege defenders

* Between one privileged class and another, where does the average citizen stand? The Lokpal issue is being fought over by protectors of one set of people and their privileges (the government and Delhi’s entrenched political class) and the sly defenders of another set of privileges and privileged (the former babus and mineral-water drinking “activists” of the Anna Hazare camp). It is time somebody said it aloud that the people of India are being duped by both.

Eyewash,no effort

* This refers to ‘No more Burra Sahibs’ and ‘Losing the lead’ (IE,July 3). The Indian leadership believes more in eyewash than in a sincere effort to overcome a problem. Hence we have framed laws and issued orders, but beyond that we seem to have no interest in administration or the well-being of the people. Whatever seems to have changed is either coincidental or just a by-product of mass frustration added to periodic elections. One wonders whether the so-called public awakening will be able to make any substantial difference to the pattern of our life.
