All ready
* Shekhar Guptas Ministry of Indefensible (IE,March 31) was apt, thought provoking and informative. He has rightly tried to convince readers that every purchase made under the defence deal is not necessarily done underhandedly though there may be some black sheep that need to be caught and given exemplary punishment. Our leadership needs to be honest to the core if India is to be in a state of defence readiness. The reader feels satisfied to know that despite allegations of corruption in defence purchases, the quality of the products was never sacrificed for money.

* The manner in which our defence ministry has reacted to the allegations by the army chief, leaves no doubts that Indias is a crisis of leadership. What else can be expected from the UPA 2 government which has been surviving on rented support from allies and is at times lucky to get life from unexpected quarters of the opposition. Its time the government rose to the occasion and adopted a strong posture based on national defence needs instead of referring all such inconvenient cases to the CBI.

Do it yourself
* Shekhar Gupta has brought out underlying facts of the present war-gaming while subtly defending the Ministry of Indefensible. The officer to soldier death ratio only reinforces the outstanding leadership quality. But should we continue to import all our defence needs and remain the worlds No 1 arms importer while we have the wherewithal, talent, infrastructure and capability to indigenise everything barring some exceptions? Reverse engineering is the fastest and most accepted method of achieving self-reliance in defence. Most of the countries the world over have been re-engineering their requirement based on successful inspirations.

Mind your words
* Brajesh Mishra has publicly declared the army chief has gone berserk. Is this the language to be used for a serving army chief? It pains one to see no one objected to his words.

Wrong inspiration?
* In Letter from the Beyond (IE,April 2),Jaithirth Rao has commendably scripted a great satire to expose the hypocrisy of the government, while swearing by reformist, democratic functioning. In doing so,it has cited the example of China. Has the UPA government suddenly developed love and respect for Chinas one-party rule and its policy of repressing its people in the name of economic growth? The Delhi polices recent highhandedness towards Tibetans protesting against Chinese President Hu Jintaos visit, did no service to the UPA government.
