European Reds Meet

The long-postponed summit conference of 29 European communist parties, representing 29 million communists in Europe, opened in Berlin with the Soviet Union pledged to accept diversity in a movement once rigidly controlled by the Kremlin. Party chief of East Germany, Eric Honekar, welcomed the delegated. General Secretary of Soviet communist party, Leonid Brezhnev, Yugoslav President Josip Tito, Rumanian leader Nicolae Ceausescu, Polish leader Edward Gierek, and other top communists were attending the meeting. Iceland and Albania were the only absentees. Communist sources said Tito and Ceausescu accepted to attend the conference only if a document of common principles drawn up before the conference accepted each party’s independence.

Hijack Crisis Skyjackers holding more than 250 passengers and crew of an Air France jet at Entebbe airport in Uganda demanded the release of 53 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, Kenya and Europe, Radio Uganda reported. The skyjackers said the prisoners should be brought to Entebbe airport and the exchange of them for the Airbus hostages should be made before 12 GMT on July 1.

Indira Set For GDR

Indira Gandhi, set to become the first Indian prime minister to visit the German Democratic Republic, was to leave for Berlin on a three-day tour beginning July 1. The two countries have enjoyed extremely good relations. But for historic reasons, diplomatic relations between the two nations were established only in 1972. However, at least three GDR prime ministers have visited India.

Seychelles Is Free

Seychelles islands became an independent republic after 162 years of British colonial rule. Its president, PM and cabinet were sworn in at the state capital, Victoria.
