Gujarat Talks

Talks which will have a bearing on the future political set-up of the centrally-administered state of Gujarat began today between the Congress high command and the Pradesh Congress leaders. Today’s discussions, which were inconclusive, began with the Gujarat Pradesh Congress President, Hitendra Desai, calling on the prime minister.

Delhi Flooded

Several low-lying villages in Delhi were flooded when the Yamuna crossed the danger mark of 204.83 metres this morning and is expected to rise further. There was no loss of life or cattle.

Big Oil Find

There has been yet another momentous offshore oil find. This comes only five months after the discovery of oil in the Bassein North structure. Announcing this latest find at a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee for his ministry, Petroleum Minister K D Malavlya said that oil had been found in an exploratory well drilled on the “fault” structure between the Bombay High and Bassein North structure.

Embassy Evacuated

Most members of the Indian embassy staff and their families in Peking were evacuated to Canton and Hong Kong following forecasts that there could be more earthquake tremors. A skeleton staff, including the ambassador, KR Narayan, and perhaps three other diplomats, is staying on in Peking.
