Both Sangh Parivar weeklies highlight the life-work and legacy of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in cover stories and articles to commemorate his birthday on December 25. “Atalji continued his battle of national interest from Parliament to the United Nations and from Delhi to the ordinary streets on his own,” the Panchjanya editorial reminds readers. With Parliament passing the Lokpal bill,Panchjanya’s cover story equates Vajpayee and Anna Hazare, and recalls Vajpayee’s attempt to get the Lokpal bill passed through Parliament during his tenure as PM. It also underlines how he favoured bringing the PM too under the Lokpal. An article in Panchjanya describes passage of Lokpal Bill as an outcome of Anna Hazare’s efforts.

“Vajpayee is known for poetic statesmanship and inclusive politics. With the true ethos of democracy, respect for the opposition voices and ability to accommodate converse views, has been the hallmark of Vajpayee’s leadership,” the editorial in the Organiser says, underlining that he “was the one who introduced the Lokpal bill in the Lok Sabha, with [the insistence [on bringing [the prime minister in the ambit”.

Describing him as a “statesmen with a soul”,the Organiser has published excerpts from L.K. Advani’s autobiography, where the author describes the former PM as “a man of destiny,a leader who deserved to lead India some day”. Describing him as an “expert in taking all along”,the Organiser has also carried an article by Shiv Kumar,a close associate of Vajpayee, wherein he is declared to be “suffering from the ills of old age”.

DIPLOMAT’S DIGNITY

In a rare gesture of appreciation for the Congress-led UPA government, the Organiser welcomes the tough stand taken against the US,over the alleged ill-treatment of an Indian diplomat. “For a change,[the Indian government has taken a tough stand and politicians have shown [a rare strength of unity in giving tit-for-tat to the arrogant US… we need to respond to the issue of ‘US arrogance’ and larger conspiracy involved in framing Indian diplomats… India needs to follow up hard on the case for the dignified acquittal of Devyani Khobragade and take a chance to teach a lesson to the US not only in tough diplomacy but also in human rights and legal enforcement,” the editorial suggests.

JAT PERSPECTIVE

As the UPA tries to woo the Jat community through reservations after the recent Muzaffarnagar riots, the Organiser appeals to the sentiments of the community with a special report providing the “Jat perspective” on the riots, dismissing reports of the plight of minorities in the camps. “It is a bitter truth that the Jats had to bear maximum amount of damage in the riots of Muzaffarnagar… Instead of healing the wounds of… [the Jats, false news is being aired regarding the death of kids in relief camps and the refugees refusing to return their villages, etc. The fact is that both the media and the administration are evading the truth,” it claims.

While Narendra Modi recently took exception to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claim that victims of the riots are being wooed by Pakistan’s ISI,the article echoes Gandhi’s apprehensions: “In the name of running relief camps for the displaced the Muslim organisations were taking help from abroad and amassing huge wealth for themselves. The fanatic organisations were also making inflammatory speeches to incite religious terrorism… it is important that these camps are shut down immediately.”
