The reason given for this was the failure of the judges to take oaths in disavowing separatism before the President by September 7.

The Insat-1B solar array has deployed itself in its correct vertical position facing the sun. After six days of gruelling examinations and investigations, a simulation study carried out by the joint ISRO-Ford Aerospace team revealed that it was the temperature that had affected the solar array. When the temperature in the simulation study was raised, the array deployed itself.

Sri Lanka judges fired

In an extraordinary development in the annals of Sri Lanka’s constitutional history, the island republic’s Chief Justice was informed by President J K Jayewardene that his continuance as well as that of other judges of the Supreme Court and the court of appeal beyond September 7 was “unconstitutional”. The reason given for this was the failure of the judges to take oaths in disavowing separatism before the President by September 7.

Assam bombing

A series of bomb explosions on the railway tracks marked the first 12 hours of the 24-hour road blockade called by the Assam agitators. The Barak Valley Express passengers had a narrow escape when a bomb exploded on the tracks near Hojai in Nowgong district. Damage to the track caused by explosions disrupted rail traffic in the Lumdig-Lanka section of the North-Eastern Frontier Railways.

Security Council vote

The United States suffered a diplomatic setback when the Security Council postponed a vote on a US-sponsored resolution to deplore the Soviet Union’s downing of a South Korean airliner. The reason for the postponement was reported to be that some third world countries in the Council were still awaiting instructions from their governments about the stand they should take on the resolution, adds PTI.
