Opinion July 21, 1983, Forty Years Ago: Teesta River Share

India and Bangladesh agreed on ad hoc sharing of the Teesta waters. Under the new arrangements, Bangladesh will get 36 per cent and India 39 per cent of the flows while the remaining 25 per cent will remain unallocated.

USSR Plane Deal

India is negotiating with the Soviet Union for a new class of transport aircraft: Ilyushin 76. Defence Minister R Venkataraman said India decided to buy the Advanced Sea King Mark 42B helicopters from Britain. The Minister assured the committee that the advanced version of MiG, which India was acquiring from the USSR, was more than a match for any other comparable aircraft of this class.

Mrs Gandhi’s Threat

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi started her two-day tour of the Garhwal region with a scathing attack on the opposition parties which she said were pursuing a one-point programme of ousting her from power and weakening the country. She saw in the new trend emerging in the country following agitation by the Akalis and activities of similar ‘’disruptive forces’’, a danger to the country’s integrity and unity and warned the people against them.

Zia On Nuke Treaty

Pakistan President Zia said that while his country’s relations with India are improving, Pakistan will not sign the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty as long as “our neighbour to the east” does not follow suit.
