The BJP stood by its call for a Delhi bandh and the Akali Dal reaffirmed its resolution to bum a copy of Article 25 of the Constitution outside Parliament. Despite appeals from all sides, both the parties said it was too late. In view of these threats, the Delhi administration is gearing up to prevent any breach of law and order. Elaborate security arrangements have been made at all sensitive points.

Dalai Lama interview

Two questions are currently engaging the attention of the Dalai Lama, who soon completes 25 years in exile. One is a possible visit he may make to China, including Tibet, some time in the summer of 1985. The other is how the next Dalai Lama should be chosen. The Dalai Lama shared his thoughts in an exclusive interview to this paper.

Resignation demand

The national council of the Lok Dal demanded the resignation of the central government in deference to democratic norms because it has failed to restore law and order in the country. A resolution adopted by the council also said that the government should seek a fresh mandate from the electorate. The resolution expressed grief at the massacre of innocent people in Punjab and Haryana and sympathised with the bereaved families.

US opens fire

US warships off the Lebanese coast opened fire for the second time in two days, in response to an attack on an unarmed American reconnaissance plane. A Pentagon spokesman said the battleship New Jersey fired 16 rounds and the destroyer Caron fired 50 rounds from its five-inch guns. The latest naval bombardment began within an hour after the departure of the last marines from the Beirut airport.
