Pak Arms Concern
The Indian government conveyed its concern to the United States over the report that Washington was likely to supply new sophisticated weapons to Pakistan. India’s concern was expressed at the Indian Foreign Secretary M K Rasgotra’s talks with the visiting Assistant Secretary of State Richard Murphy.
India-Mauritius Talks
India and Mauritius shared their common concern over the stockpiling of nuclear arms by the superpowers and increased military activity in the Indian Ocean, threatening the peace of the region, and called for urgent steps to save mankind from any nuclear holocaust. During the informal talks that President Zail Singh had with the Mauritian Governor-General Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to non-alignment and peaceful coexistence.
Charan Heads DMKP
Charan Singh formally became the President of the newly formed Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party (DMKP) and appointed H N Bahuguna as Chairman of the party’s election campaign Committee to be nominated later. Devi Lal, a former Janata Party leader from Haryana, and Syed Mir Qasim, one of the senior leaders of Bahuguna’s erstwhile Democratic Socialist Party, will be the two vice presidents of the party.
Epidemic Threat
Residents of Delhi Cantonment and Naraina village are threatened with epidemic as a result of the grossly polluted water supply in the area. Chief engineer of the Delhi Water Supply and Sewage Disposal Undertaking S A Swamy has sent an emergency telegram to the executive officer of the Delhi Cantonment Board asking him to arrange for alternative supply lines within seven days.
