With the arrival of 73 passengers and six crew members of the hijacked Indian Airlines Boeing 737 from Dubai at Delhi airport ended the longest hijack drama in the history of Indian aviation. It lasted almost two days. The hostages, who were held captive by seven pro-Khalistan youths for 38 hours under tremendous tension and mental agony, were received by relieved relatives amidst tearful scenes.
Saving Captives
The Pakistan authorities’ decision to accept the demand of the hijackers of the Indian Airlines Boeing for refuelling of the aircraft appeared to have been taken much before the Indian ambassador K D Sharma reached Lahore. The Pakistani officials informed Sharma soon after his arrival in Lahore that the refuelling of the aircraft had started, Lt General Mohammad Aslan Sham, who headed the Pakistani negotiating team, took the line that his country’s strategy was to save the passengers’ lives.
PM on Bhaskara Rao
The Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, declined to make any categorical statement about her party’s support to the Bhaskara Rao ministry in Andhra Pradesh. Mrs Gandhi told newsmen at the Sonali airport in Jamshedpur before leaving for Calcutta that she could not say whether her party would continue to support the new Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. Mrs Gandhi said the parliamentary elections would be held on schedule.
Tihar hunger strike
As many as 42 life convicts in the Tihar jail stand to gain freedom with their cases due to come up before the Sentence Revising Board of the jail. The home secretary of the Delhi Administration, Kaushal Kumar, said the board will meet “shortly”. The assurance came amid reports of unrest over the failure of the Delhi Administration to hold meetings of the Sentence Revising Board. The convicts have planned a hunger strike from September 3 if they are not given specific assurances about a meeting of the board.
