Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Thursday that in order to check the illegal drugs trade, his government had adopted stringent measures, which he hoped would also help to reduce HIV and AIDS cases among the youth as many of them get infected through intravenous drug abuse.
Saha later wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Attended the observance of 150 years of @Tripura_Police at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala today. Apart from ensuring security to the people, the State police is also taking action against those involved in disturbing the law & order. Addressed the Police officers on this occasion & advised them to ensure smooth police-public relation & strengthen the fight against drugs.”
While speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event held at Prajna Bhawan in Agartala, Saha, who also holds the home portfolio, lauded the police over a series of successful drug busts carried out in the state.
The chief minister said his government had been involving the health, social welfare and education departments together with the police to curb the drug menace. Among the measures taken to tackle the problem, he listed awareness programmes undertaken in coordination with local communities.
Also, he flagged off mobile exhibitions run on three buses, eight Gypsy vehicles and 150 two-wheelers.
Saha congratulated police officials who were awarded medals and certificates for exemplary service. However, he expressed concern at the rising number of road accidents in the state.
