Younis Khan has been tipped to be named the Pakistan vice-captain for the tour of India after the Cricket Board and national selection committee decided to relieve opener Salman Butt of this responsibility.

Sources close to the selectors said that they had recommended Younis’ name to Shoaib Malik for vice-captaincy on the tour of India.

“The selectors have met and discussed things with Younis and he is ready to accept this responsibility,” one source said.

Younis earlier this year had turned down the captaincy offer from the Board, saying he wanted to concentrate on his batting.

Last year also, ahead of the Champions Trophy in India, just 48 hours before the team’s departure he stepped down as captain. He was, however, convinced by PCB Chairman Nasim Ashraf to lead the team in the Champions Trophy.

Sources said the selectors and board had become concerned with the form of Butt after he was made vice-captain earlier this year.

“They now want him to just concentrate on his batting on the Indian tour as they believe he is a very good player who needs to do certain things right,” sources said.
