Keeping track of the snakes and ladders8217; score this week
Up
Peripheral villages: With the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC leaving no stone unturned to ensure regular water supply there. With additional water tankers, borewells and pumps being planned and the installation of water pipelines to be taken on a war footing, things could look up soon. The old pumps have already been repaired and new pumps worth Rs 2.5 lakh have been purchased. With this, the fringe villages will finally get some much-needed relief. About time too.

The PMC-RUN Hospitals: With the PMC planning a major upgrading of its 14 hospitals. Efforts are on to make the hospitals more patient-friendly and bring in more cleanliness. Measures are also being taken to ensure that auto-rickshaws are not parked at their entrances so that there is easy access to the ambulances.

Waste Management: With the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation coming up with a plan to beautify the existing garbage dumps. By building proper landfills, compacting the garbage and having a daily soil cover, the nuisance of the dumps can be lessened to a large extent. That means no more obnoxious odours, flies and rodents.

Crime-control measures: With the police taking extra measures to launch combing operations in the city and conducting interrogations to prevent the alarming rise in crime. Starting off with Budhwar Peth, plans are afoot to conduct similar raids in other parts of Pune.

Residents of Warje-Malwadi: With the Defence Ministry agreeing to allow the water-pipeline to be laid through the campus of the National Defence Academy. Earlier, the ministry had clubbed the issue with the relocation of Ahire village, and the worst sufferers were the residents. After a prolonged agitation by the residents, water supply will be a reality in their lives.

Down
Development control and plan rules, As is evident from the blatant violation of DP rules on FC Road. The width of the road has shrunk from 24 metres to 15 at places and is inconsistent throughout the road. A study by the Centre for Development Studies and Activities has revealed that at any given time, there are 1,000 vehicles parked on the road, which only serves to add to the chaos.

Pro-Arun Bhatia activism, With Chief Minister Narayan Rane declaring the issue closed as far as his government is concerned. According to him, Bhatia8217;s present posting would remain in force and an inquiry would be carried out against the officer.

Telephone Directories: With the new directories, scheduled for release in September, to contain only one-third of the new seven-digit numbers. With most of the exchanges yet to change to the new format, the dictionary will be defunct even before it hits the stands.
