For John Wright, the forthcoming tour to Pakistan will be another learning experience as a coach. ‘‘Cricketing intensity will be very high,’’ he said while speaking to The Indian Express on Wednesday.
The Indian coach admitted the Indo-Pak rivalry and the passion it arouses will be a ‘‘new experience.’’ Wright, who last toured Pakistan with the New Zealand team under Jeremy Coney two decades ago, says he had a sneak preview of the sub-continent fervour during the World Cup. ‘‘I experienced a bit of it at the Centurion Park. But to be with the Indian team in Pakistan will be quite an experience.’’
Having landed in Mumbai on Monday, he got down to business and was busy checking the cricket equipment at the Board office this afternoon. ‘‘We need this ice tub for Pakistan and those three bags,’’ he said pointing to the pile of baggage that the BCCI officials have been guarding since the team’s return from Australia.
The 50-year-old wasn’t quite forthcoming to comment more on the series. ‘‘I do not want to complicate matters,’’ he said.
The former New Zealand captain who averaged a moderate 30.32 against the Pakistanis is looking to meet some of his adversaries though. ‘‘Need some catching up with old foes,’’ he said. Among them would be his opposite number and a wily fellow at that — Javed Miandad. It has been reliably learnt that the accent on the short camp scheduled to commence at Kolkata from March 7 will be on pace. Most of the India A and under-19 pace bowlers have been asked to report to the three-day camp. Munaf Patel, Avishkar Salvi, Siddarth Trivedi, RP Singh, VRV Singh, S Sreesanth and NC Aiyappa are among those who have been summoned.
