32-kg tumor removed from patient’s abdomen
KHORAMABAD, (IRAN): A 32-kg tumor was removed from the abdomen of a 54-year-old man on Saturday in Kouhdasht, in the western province of Iran. The patient, Allahmorad Rostamiyan, who weighed 65 kg before the operation, is reportedly stable and now weighs only 35 kg. According to his doctor, Mohammad Reza Akhoundi, the tumor is the first of its kind in terms of weight. The operation lasted for seven hours because of the tumor’s viscidity with blood vessels, Dr Akhoundi added.
Boy kills thieves
MANILA: A ten-year old boy left "home alone" by his parents killed two robbers with his fathers shotgun in a southern Philipine town, a local newspaper reported. The newspaper said the unidentified boy grabbed his father’s 12 gauge shotgun when he heard the screams of a neighbour who had just been robbed by three men armed with .45 caliber pistols in the town of Glan on Saturday. The boy rushed outside the house and fired at the suspects as they fled, killingtwo of them instantly. The third escaped unhurt, the newspaper said.
Porcelain pigs
LEICESTER: Police in Leicester, central England seized a collection of porcelain pigs from a house windowsill after Muslims complained that they were offensive, police said on Monday. The porcelain figures were held at the local police station, while the owner was threatened with prosecution if she replaced the collection. The house is located in the same street as the city’s main mosque, meaning that Muslim worshippers often passed by the front window where the pig figurines were on display.Story banned
TOKYO: The Japan Government has banned a short story by American author John Updike from a high school textbook, objecting to the description of three women in bathing suits, the publisher said today. The publishing company had planned to include a translation of Updike’s "A and P" in a textbook on contemporary literature. The book would have been used from April next. The education ministry toldthe publisher that the story’s descriptions of women could embarrass young readers and would interfere with classes. "A and P" depicts a teenage supermarket worker and his observation of three young female shoppers in swimsuits. The ministry has defined six parts as offensive.
Rat invasion
MOGADISHU: Thousands of villagers in southern Somalia are fleeing an invasion of rats that has destroyed numerous fields in recent weeks, reports have said. Tens of thousands of rats in search of food are scouring fields, storehouses and farms in the fertile lower Shabelle region, devouring maize, sesame, sorghum and other crops, village elders said. Many of the several thousand families that fled the area near the Shabelle river, some 60 km south of Mogadishu, were taking refuge in the capital, village elders said.
