The world needs more than just a global tsunami warning system, said UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, urging leaders to create a system to alert countries to other natural threats as well, such as cyclones. Ever since the December 26 tragedy, world leaders have called for a tsunami warning system in the Indian ocean. A tsunami warning system already exists for the Pacific Ocean.
Speaking at the United Nations conference on The Future of Small Island Developing States in Mauritius, Annan said: ‘‘In such an endeavour, no part of the world should be ignored. We must think globally, and consider measures equal to the risk.’’
Such a system could also help warn of environmental risks posed by global warming, he added.
