World At Her Feet
MOST of Bollywood may believe Kareena Kapoor has dethroned Aishwarya Rai from the Number One spot, but the doe-eyed former Miss World is still a hot favourite with several filmmakers. Rajkumar Santoshi and the Tauranis of Tips were eager to cast her in a bit part (the only female role) in The Legend of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, but then decided against it as there was no way they could justify using a prominent star like Ash in such an insignificant role. Also, Sunny Deol has expressed his desire to cast Aishwarya in his forthcoming patriotic film, Gandhi. Remains to be seen whether the actress will give that nod of approval.
Ace Up Her Sleeve
EVEN as critics write her off completely, Manisha Koirala is getting ready to strike again. Although only a small part, she’s very excited about her role in Ramgopal Varma’s Company, and promises that she’ll silence her de-tractors with her performance in Escape From Taliban. Later this year, she’ll also be seen opposite Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt in Mehbooba, and though she does have more films in hand, she’d rather not speak about them just yet. What she’s also keeping mum about is her new avatar, that of producer. Apparently, she’s right now putting together some projects for Sahara, which might include a film for her struggling actor brother Siddharth. The personal life is looking good too — no squabbles yet with investment-banker boyfriend Cecil Antony.
Here today…
THAT there’s trouble brewing in the Kamal Haasan-Sarika marriage is stale news now. Some say the split happened following Kamal’s growing interest in Southern siren Simran (lately in the news herself after being dumped by her fiance Raju Sundaram, Prabhu Deva’s brother). Apparently, Sarika walked out of their Chennai home, but returned a few days later so that she could be with their children, who are currently appearing for their school examinations. But so far as the marriage is concerned, sources in the South are pretty confident that it’s all in the past.
Hair-Raising Story
YOU would have thought he wouldn’t meddle around with his hair, keeping in mind the fact that the hairline was fast receding anyway, but Salman Khan has gone and done it. The hunky actor is now sporting a short new crop — make that, a very short crop. When he walked into a preview recently, guests were shocked to see his spiky new look. While Salman himself looks mighty pleased with the cut, producer Bubby Kent hasn’t stopped grumbling since he heard about it: Salman still hasn’t finished shooting for Kent’s film, Mujhse Shadi Karogi, and now continuity is bound to be affected!

Nagging Doubt

Are we seeing too much of Amitabh Bachchan these days?
Suresh Oberoi: Amitabh Bachchan has a wax statue at Madame Tussaud’s in London. You would think he would be more conscious about the quality of work he does. Instead, one sees him in inane commercials with silly lines like Zor ka jhatka, dheere se lage. Dilip Kumar has never done such things. I have great respect for Mr Bachchan but this is too much.
Mahesh Bhatt: These are accidents that happen. Sometimes too many films release together. Every actor has his high points and Amitabh is at his once again.

Sajid Khan: The man is 60 and works harder than most 30-year-olds. I think it’s a good sign if we see too much of him. His vigour is commendable.
Rakesh Mehra: His presence is so strong. You simply can’t compare him to anyone.
