Women reservation bill a victim of SP-Cong deal: BJP

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said we fear that SP is putting hurdle in the passage of the Women Reservation Bill.

Doubting passage of Women’s Reservation bill in Parliament, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday alleged the bill might become a “victim” of a deal between Samajwadi Party and Congress before the July 22 trust vote.

“We fear that Samajwadi Party is putting hurdle in the passage of the bill”, she said and alleged Congress had entered into a pact with SP to scuttle the measure.

“The SP had made the condition that the bill would not be passed”, she alleged demanding passage of the bill in the coming monsoon session of Parliament so that women would benefit in elections due next year.

Besides promising its support to the bill in writing, BJP has also organised a women’s rally demanding immediate enactment of law to reserve 33 per cent seats for women in Lok Sabha and assemblies, Swaraj said.

Swaraj, an advocate of women’s participation in politics, said that according to the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of UPA, it was said that the bill would be passed on a priority basis. Though four years have already passed, the bill was only introduced in Rajya Sabha.

To a query, she said BJP was not associated with unrest in Jammu. “Congress instead creates problem by depriving Hindus of their rights”, she said.

On the controversial CD relating to allegation of cash-for-vote episode on the eve of the trust vote, the BJP leader said her party had not prepared the video.

“The CD was prepared by an Independent news channel”, she said.
