As if the massive hunt on to find a new coach for the Indian team wasn8217;t enough, the Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI now finds itself with another equally demanding job on hands8212;that of finding a replacement for Rahul Dravid, who has resigned from the post with immediate effect. The selectors8217; job, however, may turn out to be an easy one only if Sachin Tendulkar says yes to take over the mantle.
That makes Tendulkar the favourite to be the next captain, the post that he relinquished in 1999-2000 and several times later refused to take up the job once again.
It is believed that in case Tendulkar says no, the selectors may approach Sourav Ganguly too. 8220;Ganguly cannot be ruled out,8221;8217; says a senior selector. The new captain will be officially named on September 18 when the selectors meet to decide on the one-day team to play against Australia in the seven match home series later this month.
The selectors are also open to the idea of having separate captains for Tests and one-dayers. But that is likely to happen only if Tendulkar refuse the one-day captaincy and decides to lead just the Test squad. In such a scenario, current Twenty20 skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni might also get a look in.
Given the recent theories doing the rounds, Tendulkar has already told his close friends that he would like to cut short his one-day career to concentrate on prolonging his Test career. If Tendulkar decides to go ahead with this decision then the selectors might be forced to think of other options in the one-day department, Dhoni being the favourite candidate.
