The Tamil Nadu government on Monday told the Supreme Court that it wanted to invoke the urgency clause to acquire 2.5 km of land of Kodanadu Estate belonging to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in Nilgiris district (Ooty) to avoid inconvenience to the local populace.
A Bench of Justices Mukundkam Sharma and A R Dave granted two weeks to the AIADMK chief and her friend,N Sasikala, who is a co-owner of the estate to file their replies.
The land sought to be acquired forms part of a road used by 179 families of Kamaraj Nagar and Anna Nagar under the Kodanda Panchayat.
Jayalalithaa had purchased the Estate in 1995 and allegedly put up a gate on the road in 2007 and collected toll tax from those using the road.
