As China raised the border dispute heat by slamming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, the USA today hinted that it was on the side of India’s assertion that the northeastern state was an integral part of the country. The message was given by US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer who came to Kolkata yesterday on a two-day visit.

“India and China are two sovereign countries who we hope will settle all bilateral issues,” Roemer said during a press conference where he was asked questions on the US stand on whether America regarded Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India. “But elections took place (at Arunachal) and thousands of people have voted there. The USA believes in democracy. We will respect any outcome there,” the Ambassador said.

He also said that terrorism was coming to Indian soil from the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan and the US and India were working jointly to tackle the menace. “Radical extremism is coming from the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Both the USA and India are working together by way of sharing intelligence,on forensic lab and DNA testing etc. FBI people came to India after the Mumbai attacks,” Roemer said.
