In a decision that was likened to a Talibani farman by Lucknow University Associated Colleges Principal Association (LUACPA) president Dr S P Singh, the Uttar Pradesh Principal Council (UPPC) of Higher Education Institutes has imposed a ban on girl students wearing jeans. According to the Council, the decision was taken to bring down cases of harassment of girls.
In a meeting of the UPPC at DBS College here,22 principals representing the leading degree colleges of the state unanimously supported the ban in government-aided institutions. In addition, the UPPC has decided to prohibit students from bringing mobile phones to college.
However, calling the decision immature, the LUACPA president went on to say that he had never even heard of the UPPC. In fact,we have never heard about any such organisation. If there was any such body, they would at least have informed the office-bearers of the Lucknow association. No college in Lucknow is going to follow the decision, Singh, who has been the principal of the National Post Graduate College for the last 20 years, said. He added that the UPPCs claim that it represented 400 government-aided colleges was wrong. There is no state-wide organisation of principals, he said.
Justifying the ban,Principal of DBS College Ashok Kumar Srivastava said: Eve-teasers generally target girls wearing jeans or modern clothes. He added that jeans are provocative.
Maulendu Mishra, president of the Lucknow University Associated Colleges Teachers Association, said,Instead of imposing restrictions, there is need to develop more confidence among our girls.
