More than two months after he earned the BJP governments wrath for inviting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to the campus,Vice-Chancellor of Indores Devi Ahilya University Dr Ajit Singh Sehrawat has stepped down on his own. The V-C took the step after he learnt that he is set to be sacked.
Dr Ashutosh Mishra, who was appointed rector only recently, has been made the acting vice-chancellor.
While the 10-odd months that Sehrawat served as V-C were marked with trouble,Rahuls visit in January when he interacted with students was the flashpoint.
The state government had served a notice to him, asking him to explain the circumstances under which a political visit to the campus was allowed.
I am an ex vice-chancellor now. I have no story,no version to share, was all Sehrawat said when contacted by The Indian Express.
The government had maintained that the function was political because Rahul had appealed to students to join NSUI. Sehrawat had said it was apolitical and that he was not answerable to the state government.
He had also rubbed the state government the wrong way when he reportedly refused to take part in a Science conclave held on the campus in December.
After the Rahul controversy,he had ordered an inquiry against three officials accusing them of committing financial irregularities. The three were later suspended, prompting a section of lecturers and officials to launch a front to protest against him.
