Sartaj Aziz, advisor on foreign affairs and national security to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,is scheduled to come to Delhi next month in what would be his first visit to India since he assumed office. Aziz holds rank of cabinet minister.
Aziz will be in Delhi on November 11-12 for the Asia-Europe Meeting ASEM at the level of Foreign ministers, sources said here on Wednesday. ASEM is a 51-member body with 49 European and Asian countries and two regional groups EU and ASEAN.
Sources said despite the recent flare-up between the two countries, the visit is on track. Chances are very bright,as of now. We have been told the visit is on track, a source told The Indian Express on Wednesday.
Both sides are working towards scheduling a bilateral meeting between Aziz and External Affairs minister Salman Khurshid on the margins of ASEM. The visit comes at a time when 200-odd ceasefire violations by Pakistan this year have impacted the process of normalisation of ties. However,Aziz, who was Pakistans Foreign minister from August 1998 to October 1999,is no stranger to heightened tension between the two countries. Aziz and Khurshid have met twice for bilateral meetings before. This will be their third bilateral meeting and the first in Delhi.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart,Nawaz Sharif, had also met in New York last month. However,Singh also publicly expressed disappointment on Sharif not being able to fulfill his commitment regarding peace along the LoC.
Preparations have begun ahead of the meeting between Aziz and Khurshid which is expected to overshadow the Asia-Europe Meeting. The Pakistan judicial panel on prisoners comprising the countrys two retired Supreme Court judges met prisoners in Amritsar,Tihar and Jaipur jails from October 26 to 30. The panel is preparing a joint statement which is expected to recommend security of prisoners, access to legal aid, consular access within 100 days, release of mentally-challenged prisoners. Pakistan will also look forward to India releasing 55 of its prisoners, who have completed their jail term.
