Tamil Nadu-based NGO,Voice,on Monday moved for a review of the Supreme Court order to extend a one-year protection to a Tamil Nadu law allowing 69 per cent reservation for SC/STs and OBC in jobs and education. The order had also indicated the opening of a window for states in future to increase their reservation quota from the prescribed 50 per cent limit, provided they produce “quantified data” to support their claim.

It also hinted at a change in the Supreme Court’s view on state reservation in the 1993 ruling in the Mandal case, which capped quota at 50 per cent.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia and Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Swatanter Kumar, had last month, directed

the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka government to “re-visit” the states’ quota laws with their Commissions for Backward Classes.
