Mourners gather for ted Kennedy memorial

BOSTON: Mourners gathered on Thursday at the 70-mile route that was to carry the body of Senator Edward M Kennedy from the Cape Cod home to the presidential library bearing the name of one of his slain brothers. Kennedy’s loved ones began arriving shortly before noon for a private service at the family compound in Hyannis Port. Among those heading in were nieces Caroline (daughter of John F Kennedy),and Maria Shriver (daughter of his late sister Eunice); and his son Patrick Kennedy (a Rhode Island congressman). His body will lie in repose there until Friday,a Senate office statement said.

Obama to deliver eulogy at funeral

WASHINGTON: In a touching gesture,US President Barack Obama will deliver a eulogy at the funeral mass of Edward Kennedy on Saturday. Quoting White House officials,The Boston Globe said Obama will deliver a eulogy at Kennedy’s funeral mass, which has been scheduled for Saturday at The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Mission Hill section of Boston. Kennedy, who died on Tuesday, would be laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery, along the graveside of his brothers — Robert F Kennedy and John F Kennedy.

Push grows for fast choice on successor

BOSTON: The push for swiftly naming an interim successor to Senator Edward M Kennedy intensified on Wednesday in the wake of his death, with Gov Deval Patrick coming out strongly in favour of the idea and other top state lawmakers indicating they were reluctant to leave the seat vacant for months. Kennedy, concerned about the loss of a Democratic vote during the fevered effort to pass a national healthcare overhaul had asked state leaders in a letter last week to make such a change possible. On Wednesday,Democrats in Washington stepped up pressure on the Governor to see Kennedy’s wish fulfilled, and state legislative leaders said they would immerse themselves in the issue after a mourning period for Kennedy.
